Our Program

The Herban Produce Market Box is our pay as you go subscription program for fresh produce. The Market Box is our version of a CSA, which stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” Community members (that’s you!) can join our subscription by purchasing a “share” of produce that we grow throughout the year.

Market Box members can pay weekly instead of paying the full cost up front like a traditional CSA model.

In the Box

Welcome to “Eating In Season.” Each week you will receive 6-7 organically grown vegetables/herbs per box plus 3 pantry staples from other local food businesses. You can expect roughly a combination of the below groupings. Check out the What We’re Growing page to see specific varieties we are growing this season!

  • 1-3 Greens
  • 2-4 Fruiting Crops
  • 0-2 Root Vegetables
  • 1-2 Bunches of Herbs
  • 1 Dozen Eggs (odd weeks)
  • or Bread (even weeks)
  • 2 Select Rotating Items (pasta, sauces, pickles, butter etc… vegetarian friendly – no meats)

See below for optional add-ons and their pricing. All vendors providing add-on selections are businesses local to Chicago or farms within 100 miles of Chicago.

Changes to This Year’s Program

After launching our expanded vegetable CSA in the summer of 2020 and the Pantry Box subscription program in winter 2020-21 we listened to your feedback and are continuing to improve our program.

To allow for more flexiblity, we have divded subscriptions by the season. You may join at any time permitting we have the capacity to accept new signups.

The 2023 Market Box CSA will feature two box options Veggie and Veggie+.

Produce may be supplemented from other local producers.

We will launch the first Market Box of the season on Friday, May 26, 2023. Sign up to secure your spot in our Market Box subscription program today!

Cost of the Box

The price of this goodness starts at only 45$ week! After submitting the request form we will send you a link to start your subscription which will be set up as a weekly recurring charge until the end of your selected subscription. Charges for each box will go through 9 days before your Friday box.

Reducing our Carbon Footprint

Honoring our commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability, we are offering centralized pick up spots at convenient locations throughout the city.

When you sign up we will map out your location to find other subscribers near you. Once we've established a cluster of subscriptions we will contact a business local to you for convenient pick up.

Please stay tuned for new pick up locations as we add new partners.

Your boxes will be available for pickup on Thursday, Fridays and/or Saturdays during each location’s business hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

START & STOP

How do I start a Subscription?

The Market Box is a subscription service that you may join or cancel at any time. Market Boxes are available year-round every Friday starting April, 2022. We will be accepting new sign ups until we reach capacity. Our team will be in touch with you when you sign up to confirm your spot. If we are at capacity, you will be placed on a waiting list until a spot opens up. If you sign up after the April 22nd start date, please allow at least 10 days for your subscription to kick in. Our team will be in touch about your start date when you sign up.

How do I Cancel a Subscription?

Cancellation requests must be made with at least 10 days notice. If we do not receive at least 10 days notice you will be charged for the next week’s box and your subscription will be cancelled the week following that. Ex. Need to cancel before Wed. June 2 to stop Fri June 11 delivery. Otherwise you will be charged for and receive June 11 Market Box and cancellation will go into effect after.

Food Selection

Can I select what produce I get?

Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to offer customizable shares at this time. Shares are Farmers Pick and items are seasonally dependent. We grow a lot of different crops & varieties. You can expect a variety of items in your Market Box - some that you’ll love and some that you may not. We encourage you to try new recipes or share with friends!

What if I have allergies?

Please indicate any food allergies you have in the Market Box sign up form. We will do our best to substitute items you are allergic to with additional produce. We do not offer substitutions for items you dislike.

DELIVERY & PICK UP

What if I’m out of town or unable to receive deliveries?

Requests to skip or pause delivery must be made with at least 10 days notice before your anticipated skip date. Since we place orders with outside vendors for the pantry items in advance, we are unable to pause charges for skip requests made with less than 10 days notice. You may also arrange to donate your box to one of our community partners or pick up your box on the following Monday. These requests must be made to audrey@herbanproduce.com.

What if I forget to pick up?

Boxes are available on Fridays. If you do not pickup your box on Friday, we will hold your box until the following Monday. If you do not cotact us to confirm Monday pickup we will donate your box to our community partner at Marillac St Vincent Food Pantry.

Can I return my empty boxes?

Yes. While we do not have the capacity to unload your box into another receptacle on the day of delivery, you may leave your box near your front door on the following delivery week and we may reuse them.

ADD ONS

Can I add or cancel my add-ons during the season?

Yes, add-ons can be added, changed, cancelled, or skipped without incurring additional fees. Skip/change requests must be made with at least 10 days notice.

Can I purchase the add-ons without subscribing to them?

Yes, add-ons will be available for purchase on our Market Shop page for one-off purchases. Since we coordinate with outside vendors for the add-ons, purchases must be made 10 days prior to your box. If we receive your purchase with less than 10 days notice, we will include your add on in the box 2 weeks from your purchase.
